Health education is a sword inevitably required in battle against disease. It is a tool which can kill disease at its roots and that also with minimal cost. It is a science at in its most cottage form.
Govt. of India has various programmes to enlighten village people with knowledge. The government is trying in every possible means to create health awareness in rural and tribal areas of our country. But the question raised here is that are people of rural areas only devoid of health awareness. The strata of society which lives in metropolitan cities, people who are qualified as experts of different fields are in equal need of health education.
The people have preoccupied orthodox intellect. They never try to understand science behind the matter. They are easily trapped into superstitions. What is the use of stressing basic education to everybody if nobody puts that into use?
I and my peers in pharmacy are studying hard so that we can put our knowledge into use for bringing better health and peace to society. "Healthy mind stays in healthy body" a saying which is true in all aspects.
And healthy mind will bring on prosperity to our country. But the people hardly follow any medical advice which is invariably essential. Numbers of people that visit quacks are too large.
All that health articles written in lay press are considered authentic even without bothering who has written that and does that writer even owe education to write health article.
Sayings of "YOGBABA" are considered to be the most scientific, a person who actually should be jailed for expressing his views on health.
It's not that proper action is not taken on such people for misleading the public but instead they are supported by "vote greedy" people, people sitting in big white building taking decision on health activities of country who never help a researcher in his work.
People believe that medical drugs available in market and prescribed by doctors are full of adverse effect and they are only for suppressing disease rather than curing it compared to those things available under name of "herbal" or "homeopathy" which are only pill of cure.
They don't trust words of doctor but blindly follow anything told to them by "guruji" residing in temple who can hardly spell "disease" and is too far to say anything on health. This is not the scenario of people who are illiterate but the same situation prevails even in business tycoon owning a multinational company of drugs, I.T engineer who applies his software for better working of medical devices, richest economist who tries all ways to earn money without earning knowledge on health.
We need to bring renaissance in mind of our people and make them use their wit before following anything told to them related to health.
Taking education level to 98% won't achieve health level to even 10% in such scenario. We need to make people understand medical science and prevent them from falling in pit of superstition which takes disease to incurable stage and creates a huge health burden on country more than enough in hampering her progress.
